How does Gamescovery know what games I like? Do you read my accounts from platforms like Steam, or do I add games manually? expand_more
Currently, Gamescovery works through manual input. You search for and rate games you've played directly on our platform to build your personal taste profile. We do not read games data from your accounts from stores like Steam or itch.io.
This manual approach is intentional for a few reasons:
- It avoids the complexity and risk of handling sensitive data and private account information from other platforms. You maintain full control over what information you share.
- Rating games as you add them encourages you to think about what you specifically enjoyed, which can lead to more nuanced recommendations than a simple binary "owned/not owned" list.
We are aware that manual entry can be a barrier. If there is strong community demand for secure, optional account linking in the future, we will certainly re-evaluate this feature. For now, you can search and rate from our library of itch.io titles, with plans to expand to other platforms soon.
Is Gamescovery inspired by or an improvement on Ludocene? expand_more
No, Gamescovery is an independent project with a different vision and approach. While we share the same core goal of helping gamers discover titles they'll love, our methods and philosophy differ significantly:
- Gamescovery focuses on a straightforward, efficient interface built around a "play → rate → get recommendations" loop. We prioritize clarity over gamification.
- We employ a detailed 1-10 rating scale to capture nuanced preferences, rather than a simple "like/dislike" system.
- Your suggestions are generated solely from your own ratings and stated preferences. Gamescovery does not incorporate recommendations or "tastes" from other users or influencers, aiming for a purely personalized experience.
Why do I need to connect a game store account (like Steam) to sign up if you don't import my games or collect my personal data? expand_more
We use game store accounts solely for secure and convenient authentication (a process known as OAuth). This is similar to when websites let you "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Apple."
Here’s why this approach benefits everyone:
- Your personal login data (password, email) is managed and secured by the game store (e.g., Steam, itch.io). Gamescovery never sees or stores it. We only receive a unique, anonymous token to confirm your identity.
- It saves significant development time and cost that would otherwise be spent building a custom, secure login system from scratch.
- You don't need to create and remember another new username and password. You can sign in instantly with an account you already have.
To be perfectly clear: Connecting your account is only for logging in. It does not grant us permission to access your game library, friend list, or any other private data from that platform. Your recommendations are built entirely from the games you manually rate within Gamescovery.
