Gamescovery

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how we help you discover your next favorite game.

What is Gamescovery? expand_more
Gamescovery is a personalized game recommendation engine designed to suggest games based on your actual taste, not just popularity. It uses your ratings of games you've played to find hidden gems and titles you're likely to love.
Who is behind Gamescovery? expand_more
I'm a solo developer passionate about solving the "endless scroll" problem in game discovery. This project is community-driven and built based on real player feedback.
Is there a cost to use Gamescovery? expand_more
There will always be a free tier. Future premium features may be considered, but the core recommendation engine will remain free.
How do I get started? expand_more
First, you need an itch.io account. Then go to app.gamescovery.com. Once you logged in with your itch.io account, you can start rating games you've played and/or generate your first personalized recommendations.
What platforms does Gamescovery support? expand_more
Currently, we're focusing on indie games from itch.io to build and prove the concept. The goal is to expand to major platforms (Steam, Epic, GOG, etc.) in the future.
How are recommendations different from store algorithms? expand_more
Most store algorithms prioritize sales or popularity. Gamescovery prioritizes personal taste and similarities in gameplay, style, and design - helping you discover games you might otherwise miss.
Can I fine-tune my recommendations? expand_more
Not now, but future updates will allow you to adjust sliders for genre, mood, art style, developer, and more. Your feedback during beta will help prioritize which controls to add first.
What does "beta" mean? expand_more
Beta means the service is live but still in active development. You might encounter bugs, limited features, or rough edges. Your feedback will directly shape improvements and new features.
How long will the beta last? expand_more
There’s no set timeline. We’ll move to a more stable release once core features are polished and the community is happy with the recommendations.
What should I do if I find a bug or have a suggestion? expand_more
Please join our community and let us know about your problems or ideas.
Will my data be reset after beta? expand_more
We don’t plan to reset user data, but we’ll give notice if it becomes necessary for technical reasons.
What data do you collect? expand_more
We collect your game ratings, recommendations, and basic account info, provided by itch.io.
How is my data used? expand_more
Your data is used solely to generate personalized recommendations and improve the recommendation engine. We do not sell your data to third parties.
Can I delete my account and data? expand_more
No, but this ability will be added in the future.
Will you support consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch)? expand_more
That’s the long-term vision, but our initial focus is PC gaming platforms, starting with itch.io.
Are you planning to add social features (friends, lists, reviews)? expand_more
No.
How can I support the project? expand_more
The best way to support us now is by being an active beta tester, providing feedback, and sharing Gamescovery with friends who love discovering games. Future support options (like optional donations) may be considered.
How does Gamescovery know what games I like? Do you read my accounts from platforms like Steam, or do I add games manually? expand_more

Currently, Gamescovery works through manual input. You search for and rate games you've played directly on our platform to build your personal taste profile. We do not read games data from your accounts from stores like Steam or itch.io.

This manual approach is intentional for a few reasons:

  • It avoids the complexity and risk of handling sensitive data and private account information from other platforms. You maintain full control over what information you share.
  • Rating games as you add them encourages you to think about what you specifically enjoyed, which can lead to more nuanced recommendations than a simple binary "owned/not owned" list.

We are aware that manual entry can be a barrier. If there is strong community demand for secure, optional account linking in the future, we will certainly re-evaluate this feature. For now, you can search and rate from our library of itch.io titles, with plans to expand to other platforms soon.

Is Gamescovery inspired by or an improvement on Ludocene? expand_more

No, Gamescovery is an independent project with a different vision and approach. While we share the same core goal of helping gamers discover titles they'll love, our methods and philosophy differ significantly:

  • Gamescovery focuses on a straightforward, efficient interface built around a "play → rate → get recommendations" loop. We prioritize clarity over gamification.
  • We employ a detailed 1-10 rating scale to capture nuanced preferences, rather than a simple "like/dislike" system.
  • Your suggestions are generated solely from your own ratings and stated preferences. Gamescovery does not incorporate recommendations or "tastes" from other users or influencers, aiming for a purely personalized experience.
Why do I need to connect a game store account (like Steam) to sign up if you don't import my games or collect my personal data? expand_more

We use game store accounts solely for secure and convenient authentication (a process known as OAuth). This is similar to when websites let you "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Apple."

Here’s why this approach benefits everyone:

  • Your personal login data (password, email) is managed and secured by the game store (e.g., Steam, itch.io). Gamescovery never sees or stores it. We only receive a unique, anonymous token to confirm your identity.
  • It saves significant development time and cost that would otherwise be spent building a custom, secure login system from scratch.
  • You don't need to create and remember another new username and password. You can sign in instantly with an account you already have.

To be perfectly clear: Connecting your account is only for logging in. It does not grant us permission to access your game library, friend list, or any other private data from that platform. Your recommendations are built entirely from the games you manually rate within Gamescovery.
